Decks and Patios in Spokane, WA

We build new decks and patios in composite or pressure-treated wood, open or covered, for homes in Spokane and North Idaho. The price depends on the material, the size and height, and the railing and any roof cover.

Typical cost: $15,000 to $60,000 per project

What moves the price:

  • Composite versus wood
  • Size, height and stairs
  • Railing style and a roof cover

Built for freeze and thaw

At NOAA’s Spokane Felts Field station, 5.3 miles from Spokane, about 123 nights a year drop to 32°F or below (1991-2020 normals). NOAA’s Coeur d’Alene station, 1.4 miles from Coeur d’Alene, shows about 121. Water in wood and gaps freezes and thaws all winter, so footings go below the local frost depth and the details around joints and fasteners matter.

Composite or wood

Composite costs more up front and needs no staining. Pressure-treated wood costs less and needs sealing or staining to hold up. Ask for both prices so you can compare.

Deck or patio

A patio is laid at ground level, so it usually costs less than a raised deck. Patios are usually pavers or poured concrete. Pavers can be lifted and reset when the ground shifts, and a poured slab is one piece that can crack with frost.

Rebuild or replace

If the posts, footings and joists are sound, new decking and railing can go on the old frame. If they’re rotted or undersized, the frame is replaced first. A deck’s price climbs with height, stairs, railings and a roof cover.

Permits

Whether a deck needs a permit depends on its height, its size and whether it attaches to the house, and the building office decides. We’ll go over permits for your project at the estimate.

Questions about decks and patios

Is composite or wood decking better?

Composite costs more up front but needs no staining. Wood costs less and needs sealing or staining to hold up through freeze and thaw.

Do decks need a permit?

It depends on height, size and whether the deck attaches to the house. We'll go over permits for your project at the estimate, and your city or county building office has the final say.

Are decks more expensive than patios?

Usually, because a deck is built up off the ground with framing, stairs and railings. A patio at ground level is simpler.
